That f%cking shoe...

Some mornings it can feel like the universe is conspiring against you.

Take this morning.

The crew is sluggish.

It’s Friday.

Been a long week for everyone.

The struggle bus is running on fumes.

I note the time.

Time to get moving to school.

We mobilize.

Get to the car.

I have 2 out of my 3 passengers.

One left behind.

Which isn’t abnormal.

Time passes.

Still waiting.

‘I wonder where Liam is’ I say out loud.

‘He’s looking for his shoe’ says Mady.

‘He texted you’

It’s getting later now.

For every minute later we leave, the traffic to school builds exponentially.

I head towards the house.

Liam is walking out in socks…his indoor soccer shoes in hand.

‘Do they fit?’

‘I don’t know’ he says.

‘Well try them, I can’t take you to school without shoes’

He does.

They don’t.

Back to the house.

I tell him to get his boat shoes.

‘My what?’ he asks.

‘Your dressier shoes from last year’

He understands.

He finds them.

‘Do they fit?’

‘They’ll have to’ he says.

I pick up the lone shoe.

‘Take it to school. FIND your other one’

‘Otherwise, I know what we’re doing today after school’

We head out.

I’m hot and bothered.

Traffic doesn’t care — it seems to like me like this.

We hit every traffic light along the way.

Each one laughing.

Each one saying ‘Got somewhere to be?’

We drop Mady.

The boys get an earful about preparation and time and being responsible for gearing up for the day.

I drop the boys in the nick of time.

No one is late.

It starts raining on the way back.

The birds are chirping as I open the car door when I get home.

The universe…content with itself.

Probably wondering why I’m not.

I’m laughing at myself, the stress of the morning and that f%cking shoe!
